Only My Word Against His

You have only my word against his;

The wool he freely gives to the wind,

The carpentry he builds in the roots,

The masonry he washes to the sea

And my need for connection in the

Petal spokes, web of existence, a

Lichen clad ash, tree, hand or twig

Alone amid the chaos of creation.

My source labyrinth travels a brawn

Moss mound of burial and rebirth,

Night redrawn beneath a hundred

Stellar heavens and steamy hells,

Pieces set to a breathing of reedy

Water gurgle, green as insect music,

Bird gael and lamb stone, scraping

Wind in the wall, river in the waller.

Sheep’s boulders, fluid hills each

Trimmed to the quick of black root,

Last seed of the stone cone to fall,

Change of mind, memory at dawn,

The vein and the teal stripe of my

Creature runs through earthworks

Linked by serpent, whispered leaf,

Seen with more than eyes or ears.

The true borders of all river ripple,

Land of caroled and kindred notion

The color of God’s every blood in

His word, the iron red ocean of life.
