JANUARY 2014

Space-Time 11:38 PM
(a painting I began in 1964,
though unfinished it still speaks to me)

The towns are asleep -

All but the chorus of cosmic events
Roars awake overhead, and like me,
A one watt dot on the horizon, a bulb
Powers and keeps my late night watch.

Eerie events are ignored -

In the jeweled dark that towers above
It's not so much the seeing that
Shapes my vision as an urgent feeling,
A hint of things yet to be discovered.

Gravel roads are quiet -

The dust is settled and still, trees and
Mountains indistinct silhouettes.
Halos and refractions arc to the stars,
To high heavenly heavens and back.

Night is a frieze -

Chill and dewy haze paint the wall of
Dark that tops the earth in stark
Contrast, insurrection of color against
The sky, grounds blue in fugue state.

Fifty years I've worked -

Casting a light on deserted streets,
Painterly show to validate my vampire
Insomnia, sampling the nightscapes
Of prominence and fire, burning late.
