PORTRAIT OF A TESTED HEART
Walking from room to room
Until the sun enters in, a ghostly
Chill of my inner being takes hold
Until my flannels face the day.
Footsteps behind in half dark halls
Remind me how I got here; that
Creaky board, a bare place in the
Runner, the Kmart, but yes, me.
Spirits roam everywhere but within,
Restless as the day they were born,
Destined to find all but a torn photo
Of a tested heart, an old experiment.
Lead window weights pull down,
No paralleling relief of lightness, my
Padding feel of gravity expects to
Meet my hope, still searching darkly.
