Wednesday Ham

You take me back to the days we thought

we were prodigies in the practice room

being young and loving to ham it up

waiting for your piano player to arrive.

I was always free on Wednesdays

Hanging around the sausage shop or

the square, looking for my piano player

maybe in one of the Harvard piano rooms.

Wednesday, the ham went on sale

Magically arrived from some distant farm

Where the only red meat you ever loved

Appeared on display in Deluka’s window.

All you may have in common with me

Is the sausage shop, the Wednesday ham

And the belief that life was a song, back

when we knew the same piano player.
