STIRRING UP THE BOTTOM
We have started a poetry revival in historic Shockoe bottom and shall continue to stir it here on the
World Wide Web.

SEPTEMBER  2003

Alone in the Garden of Loveliness

Anticipating a lover, perhaps, he waits

Rippled by light wind, the frip of canopy fringe,

A chance encounter with smells of spring,

A gardener’s lasting memory of desires,

Beds and plots laid out according to early and

Late blossom, naked against his lot in life.

Afternoon of gardening, nothing at stake,

The aroma, the tools, the earth turns up

As fresh as a layer of devil’s food cake.

No deeper root than his feeling, keeper of

Originals, costuming everything from butterfly

To cobweb, tender bud to odd perfume;

He waits to be convinced by a kiss,

A nervous whisper, rush into silent hunger

Near to exhaustion from wonder,

Sniffs and fondles a keepsake of summer

With a Latin name, bells that quiver like

Speech, reaching into his refuge of love.

A green thumbs up, every first encounter,

He‘s not lost sight of celebration, of ovals

And tears, brush let loose in dreaming with

The power to repeat shapes, to force

Surrender to any other name, her breath

Still sweet on a forgotten tongue.
